Keeping your hair healthy during the summer heat takes more than just using sunscreen—it’s about combining salon-grade techniques with protective habits. Here are a few stylist-approved tips and tricks to keep your locks looking and feeling their best during the hottest months of the year:
1. Pre-Sun Protection is Essential (Like SPF for Your Hair)
Pro Tip: Just like skin, hair needs a shield before sun exposure.
Leave-in sprays with UV filters (like Aveda Sun Care Protective Hair Veil or the Kevin Murphy Everlasting Colour Leave-in-treatment ) act as a barrier against UV damage.
DIY Tip: Mix a teaspoon of your favorite hair oil (e.g., Kevin Murphy- Young Again Oil, Moroccan Oil, etc.) with water and spritz it lightly on your strands before stepping out for a day out at the lake, pool or any outdoor activities!
2. Master the Art of Hydrating Treatments
What top stylists do: Deep-condition before the damage, not after.
Use a weekly mask rich in ceramides, amino acids, and humectants. My favorite for Summer hair is the Kevin Murphy Hydrate Me Masque or our Re-store Treatment!
Under-the-radar hack: Apply your mask, wrap your hair in plastic wrap, then a warm towel for 30 minutes. This “salon steaming effect” opens cuticles and pushes moisture deep in.
3. Rinse Smart After Pool or Ocean
Post-swim ritual from pros:
Immediately rinse hair with fresh water after swimming to prevent chlorine or salt from sticking.
Follow with a chelating shampoo (like Kevin Murphy Maxi Wash or Malibu C Swimmers Wellness Shampoo) once or twice a week to detox minerals and prevent green or brassy tints.
4. Avoid High Heat Styling – but If You Must…
Salon trick: Use thermal protectants with bonding ingredients.

Wear wide-brimmed hats lined with silk or satin scarves inside—heat AND friction protection.

Hairdresser advice: Schedule trims every 6-8 weeks in summer—even just a dusting.
Prevents sun-split ends from traveling up the shaft.
Opt for low-maintenance layers that let you air dry with shape (less need for hot tools).
7. Cool Water is Key
Stylist trick for shine: Always finish your wash with a cold rinse.
It helps seal the cuticle, making hair smoother and more reflective.
Bonus: reduces frizz in humid conditions.
8. Protective Styling on Repeat
Go-to styles: Braids, buns, and twists shield hair ends.
For beach days, apply a nourishing oil (like Young Again or Morrocan oil) to damp hair, braid it, and wear a hat—essentially a hot oil treatment on the go.
9. Don't Forget the Scalp

Use a scalp exfoliant or gentle scrub once a week to remove sweat, oil, and dead skin. I love our Kevin Murphy Scalp Scrub!
Massage your scalp for 2-3 minutes daily to boost circulation (helps with growth and oil balance).

Brassy hair, be gone! Time to tone it down with some toning shampoo and conditiners- Think of these like color-correcting formulas for your hair. They help neutralize unwanted warmth so your color stays balanced and fresh
Come in for a TONE,TREAT, TRIM session in between appointments to give your hair some TLC, keep your tone looking fresh, and that brassiness at bay.
Still dealing with stubborn brass? clarify it with some clarifying treatments. Minerals and metals in our water are a blondes worst nightmare! Having a solid clarifying regimen will make a world of difference.
